Why Does My Bathroom Smell Like Sewage?
A sewage smell in the bathroom is caused by a dry trap, a blocked vent, a broken seal or a drain blockage letting sewer gas back into the room. Each cause has a distinct fix, from simply running water to a full drain repair.
Every drain has a trap designed to hold a small amount of water that blocks sewer gas from rising back up. When that trap dries out, or a seal elsewhere fails, gas escapes into the room, which is the most common reason for a sudden bathroom odor.
Common Causes
- Dry P-trap — a drain used rarely (a guest bathroom, a floor drain) can dry out and let gas through.
- Blocked vent stack — a blocked roof vent stops sewer gas from escaping outdoors, pushing it back through drains instead.
- Broken wax seal — a failed toilet base seal lets sewer gas leak around the toilet rather than through it.
- Drain blockage — trapped waste and buildup in the drain line can produce odor even without a full block.
- Cracked pipe — a cracked drain or vent pipe behind a wall can leak gas into the room.
Quick Fix to Try First
Run water in every drain in the bathroom, including floor drains, for about a minute. This refills any dry traps and often resolves the smell immediately if a dry trap was the cause.
When to Call a Plumber
If running water doesn’t resolve the smell, the cause is likely a blocked vent, a broken seal or a drain fault that needs inspection. Drain cleaning or a targeted repair clears the blockage or reseals the fault causing the odor.
